Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Bishop Dan is having a much needed vacation this month, so I am sending out a weekly Update.
Last week, I gave you a summary of flood damage on the Susquehanna and Mohawk Rivers. I mentioned the damage to St Paul's, Sydney; St Matthew's, Unadilla; Christ Church, Walton; St John's, Delhi; and St James, Oneonta. Since then we have learned the following:
Christ Church, Deposit - church basement and rectory bottom floor flooded, much damage to the downtown area.
Emmanuel, Little Falls - although the church fared fine, there is much damage to the village. Some parishioners' homes damaged badly.
Good Shepherd, Canajoharie - although the church fared fine, there is much damage to the downtown.
Grace Church, Mohawk - some water in the church basement but no significant damage - some parishioners homes destroyed.
St Augustine's, Ilion - church OK, many homes flooded.
That is the latest on what we have heard. The clergy are seriously involved in assisting families and repairing their churches. Episcopal Relief and Development has sent some money to assist families in some villages. If you can help, please send contributions directly to the parishes. See also the "School Backpack" initiative sponsored by Calvary, Burnt Hills, and on last week's Update Addendum. If you would like to offer yourself as a servant in the villages, contact Patti Gibbons (518-692-9550). She is coordinating offers to help clean up.
Beaver Cross Camp is going well! A good staff, functioning under the leadership of Camp Director Chris Copeland, is providing a wonderful environment for the kids. I visited them all yesterday and found that all are extremely happy with the experience. Starting this Sunday, we will have two weeks worth of middle scholars (special prayers, please!) followed by two weeks of high schoolers. There are a few openings left, so contact Chris if interested - 518-692-9550.
