Diocesan Update - January 12, 2010
Mission Teams to Haiti and Dominican Republic
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I ask your prayers for the people of Haiti - particularly those in Port-au-Prince who have suffered a terrible earth quake this afternoon.
I wanted to let you know that our Mission Team which is in Lascahobas is fine and that our friends at Holy Spirit and those folks who live in Lascahobas while very shaken are ok. The town did not suffer any damage. They are on the high plateau about 60 miles outside of PaP and are safe. Sadly we have not heard from the Sisters of St. Margaret and we are concerned for their welfare. The Cathedral complex has strong well constructed buildings and we are sure much better able to withstand some shaking but we do not know for sure how they have fared. We have been trying to reach Sister Marie and will let you know when we do. We have recently established a relationship with an orphanage in PaP and have not been able to reach them either.
CNN has been our best source of general information. Our mission leader Tim Schmehl reported that the cell tower in Lascahobas is still operating but they are concerned about the roads...especially those coming off the plateau. The team is hoping to go to Port-au-Prince tomorrow and we will let you know of any reports from them.
Faithfully,
Linda F. Stevens, Albany Episcopal Diocese Missions Coordinator
P.S. - Deacon Polly Bailey reports that the mission team in the DR is safe and moving to higher ground. No additional details from them.
