Appalachia

One of the oldest missions of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia is Grace House on the Mountain. It is Located between St. Paul and Coeburn Virginia. In the summer of 1917, Miss Virginia Pave and Miss Kate Woolridge became the first Deaconesses to move to Grace House on the Mountain We from Diocese of Albany have been traveling here for many years.

Grace House is a learning service center, reaching out to help the families in this rural area of Southwest Virginia. They help people who do not have the means or are unable to complete household repair task to keep them warm, safe and dry.  We work with the families using our skills, not only in repairing what is needed, but also in sharing the words with them.

One of the most favorite testimony of so many, “I thought I was coming to serve, but I was the one that received more than I gave.”

Work project could include, painting, repair walls/floors, building or repairing steps/porches/ramps, plumbing, repairing leaky roofs, and we try to base projects on group request and lever of experience. Its not all work, some time is spent with host family enjoying music.
